Pipedown 001

Our pals over at Pipedown have always been absolutely top at bringing the web, the world's most forward thinking dance music - whether that be Hip-Hop, House, Techno, UK Funky, Dubstep, UK Garage or anything else in between. This dedication has seen a fairly large payoff for the Pipedown lads, especially recently. SDUK's track Clunge is out soon on Starkey's Slit Jockey Records imprint as a double A-side with Numan's Skull Crusher (pre-order here or here). Also recently, of the web's most well known blogs You Can Call Me Pelski recently hailed Pipedown as one of their 'Best Things About 2009'. So what better way to ring in the new year with a new mix and a new enterprise from the Pipedown boys?

This new enterprise brings Pipedown firmly into the physical realm, with the Pipedown monthly night kicking off a week from today, Wednesday 27th. James Blake, Greena, Om Unit and Elijah & Skilliam are playing, all of whom I strongly recommend googling if you haven't yet (also keep your eyes peeled for some of these names appearing at new Brighton night Aka Aka Roar sometime in the next few months).

To find out more information about the Pipedown night, head here or to the facebook link here. To help promote the night, each of the four residents is creating a mix of fresh tunes for your ears - first off is Joel Baker aka Cntrst. The mix includes a few tracks from everyone playing, and is tiiight as. Must have listening. The tracklist follows, with download link and stream from mixcloud at the bottom of this post.

Looking Back - Dilla Style

A post today in memory of legendary beatmaker Jay Dilla - Jay Dee has to be one of my biggest influences, especially as far as hip hop goes. So rather than give away any free tunes today, I'd much rather post up some youtube videos of some of JD's greatest tunes, and let you do the right thing - head over to Itunes Music Store, Juno Download, Boomkat or Beatport. Top tip to check out are the Donuts album on Stone Throw. Enjoy the tracks and please support!

Mix Monday #2

We had an interesting weekend me and Ben... Saturday night was supposed to be a jolly knees up at Chew The Fat! where Ben was DJ'ing in Room 2. However, it turned into a bit of a flop. Come 10pm and I still hadn't left my mates' house in Acton, where we were pre-lashing before popping down to see Ben. He'd been selected as part of a final lineup for winners of a DJ competition setup by Chew The Fat!

We still hadn't left at 11pm either, and I was becoming frustrated. Ben was already there, psyching himself up for one of the most important sets of his DJ career to date, and I was waiting for someone to blowdry some socks. I finally reached Aldgate East station at 12:30, just as Ben was scheduled to start.

When I got there I found a queue longer than life itself, with a, one in, one out door policy. What then followed what much cursing by myself at my cronies for their shocking ability to get ready, by the proposed leaving time of 10:15. Ben then came out of the Venue at 1am, as he had been put on half an hour early, because of a no show. Not only did I miss Ben's set, but I also missed A1 Bassline, Foamo, Pirate Sound System and Raffertie. I finally got in at about quarter to 2 to catch Warrior One, Randomer, DC Breaks and Bare Noize. DC absolutely killed by the way, I strongly suggest you check him out!

So, a bit of a shocking night in all honesty... but, let's just congratulate Ben, because he eventually won the competition for his "daringly creative mixing and tune selection. Well done, a big year is ahead of Ben I am very sure of it, as he's been signed up by Chew The Fat's DJ agency... bigups! We will keep you posted on future Chew The Fat! nights that Ben may play at.

Anyway, let's get started with the first post of the week... mixes!

It's that time again... when Kill Em' All returns to Fabric for another all night disco stomper, this month with the holiest guest of them all... Erol Alkan. What better way for us to get in the mood for such an epic night, than Stopmakingme providing an hour of glithy and melodic electro/techno beats.
Focussing more on the music of now, this is exactly what I'll be listening to come 6pm on Friday night... ready to lace up my dancing shoes for the night.
Sporting some new remixes, including his fantastic rework of We Have Band's Divisive, this pretty much sums up his sound in the club down to perfection, top mix!

1. Green Velvet & Kid Sister - Everybody Wants
2. Boy 8-Bit - A City Under Siege (Stopmakingme Remix)
3. Tiga - Sex O'Clock (Matias Aguayo Remix)
4. Populette - Mommy (TBD Remix)
5. Booka Shade & Marc Romboy - Everyday Of My Life (Martin Landsky Remix)
6. Sven Brede - Sweat
7. Sloppy Seconds - Feel It
8. Hot City - No More
9. Lykke Li - Dance Dance Dance (Dixon Edit)
10. Touch Sensitive - Body Stop
11. Sounds Superb - Pseudo Wind
12. Boogie Corporation - Dirty Rips
13. Kraftwerk - Aero Dynamik
14. We Have Band - Divisive (Stopmakingme Remix)
15. In Flagranti - ExExEx (Golden Bug Remix)
16. Pink Skull - Peter Cushing

Next up is L-Vis 1990 and his awesome new mix for Redlight's In New DJs We Trust show on Radio 1Xtra... half an hour of crunkin house and future bass vibes. You heard it from here first, but that Ripe Banana VIP will set the tone for the bass sound of 2010 for sure. So hypnotic, I played it out louder than life a few days ago from Bok Bok's January mix, it just goes straight through you! These two continue to shape the future of UK dance music, the diversity of their sound knows no limits and they will bury you!
Also, please check out the newly released United Groove Remixes EP out on Mad Decent now!

1. Mosca – Square 1 (L-Vis 1990 Remix)
2. Mike Dunn – Deep Down
3. Mosca – Nike
4. Kingdom – That Mystic
5. Dva – Ganja
6. Bok Bok – Ripe Banana VIP
7. Geiom & Marita – Sugar Coated Lover (Brackles & Shortstuff remix)
8. L-Vis 1990 – United Groove (Buraka Som Sistema remix)

The last mix comes from one of my favourite producer's of 2009 in Lee Mortimer, and no it's not just because we share names... he is literally a legend. He apitomised everything that was genuinely good about the old fidget scene (Snake Pit was brilliant)... and he's pioneering the more credible sounds of the post-wobble exodus... Superman with Foamo being his latest exponent.
It's sad that I've never witnessed a set from Lee, I've passed up the occasion far too many times because of money issues and such, but he's definitely on my must see list this year.

1. Sam Young vs. Rosie Gaines - Closer than Close (2010) (Lee Mortimer Remix)
2. Kid Kenobi - Move That Body (Destroy Disco Remix)
3. Hostage - I Get High

5. MAGNVM! - Bingo! (Reset! Remix)
6. Tonka - Jack Track (Black Noise Remix)
7. Visage - Fade to Grey (Lee Mortimer Remix)
8. Zinc feat. Benga and Ms Dynamite - My DJ
9. Cold Blank - Los Angeles (Lee Mortimer Remix)
10. Hostage - Valhalla
11. Ajapai - What Do You Hear?
12. Designer Drugs - Drop Down
13. Bassmonkey & Bianca Lindgren - Get Busy (Lee Mortimer Remix)
14. Big Pink - Dominos (Switch Remix)
15. Voodoo Chilli - Check Out Our Groove (Herve Club Edit)

30. The Count & Sinden - Strange Things (R1 Ryders Funkitek Refix)
31. Katzenjammers – Cars

Ok, so it actually baffles me that this is AC Slater's first ever mix for Radio 1... Kissy what the hell were you doing in 2008... mate loss of points there, sort it out, even Granny Nightingale beat you to this one... anddddd to add to the wound AC doesn't even produce breaks, what the hell!

I Killed Kenny on BBC Introducing Kent

Hey Hey, quick post for you here, with some big news on production trio I Killed Kenny, whose new track was featured on last night's BBC Introducing Kent by Jacob Richard. It's the first track from their upcoming EP, Shooting Birds, which we gave you a heads up on a few weeks ago.

The track, Something In The Blood, a dark, brooding dubstep entity sampling 28 Days Later, can be heard on their soundcloud page below. It was featured as the hottest track of the week on Richard's show and can be heard at around the 8 minute mark on the latest iPlayer entry, here.

Mixes Monday #1

Kicking off this week with the relaunch of the highly renowned Squeaky Bleeps 'Mix Monday' feature (coz not every other single blog posts up mix features with some sort of witty alliterative title. And our title isn't even really witty, just alliterative).

First up we have a mix from renowned dubstep, 2step and everything in between DJ, Oneman. Oneman has reached some fairly lofty heights in the world of 2/dub-step DJing without ever producing a single beat - fairly impressive considering how production-centric that world is. He was the only DJ on Mary Anne Hobbs Generation Bass show not to produce, has a show on Rinse FM and needless to say is pretty neat on the 1s and 2s. If you're a Brighton local, or even South Coast local, then make sure you reach to new night Aka Aka Roar. All the lineups are heavy, but Oneman's headline set on Monday 18th January will be something truly special if this mix is anything to go by. This new mix from him has some cracking tunes in it too - I heard that Boogaloo Crew tune played by them on Friday, and it really goes off in a club - a lovely 2stepping beat and great lush sweeping synths. New material in the mix comes from Joy Orbison (She Dressed In Her Best has to be the best tune yet from JO?), Terror Danjah (Air Bubble is the slightly more melodic, but still truly deep tune from TD's upcoming Butterz release), Brackles & Shortstuff as well as Mumdance. Anyway, nuff chat bout the mix, tracklist follows with a direct download link here.
and the Mixcloud player for the mix below too if streaming is more your thing.

Bad Autopsy - Mag
Hard House Banton - Reign
Efdemin - Acid Bells (Martyn's Dark Mix)
Delphic - Doubt (Doc Daneeka VIP Dub)
Boris Dlugosch - Bangkok (Roska Remix)
Alphabeat - The Spell (Drums of Death Remix)
Hervé - No Sleep (Martelo's Insomniac Remix)
Desto - 20 20 Hindsight
Addison Groove - Footcrab
Joy Orbison - She Dressed In Her Best
Guido - Beautiful Complication
Brackles & Shortstuff - Pipey D
Mumdance - So Squalid
Terror Danjah - Air Bubble
Swindle - Airmiles
The Boogaloo Crew - Rising Sun
Lil Wayne - A Milli (Harmonimix)
Kelis & Andre 3000 - Millionaire

Next up is a local boy done good - Jared Philippo aka ADHDJs is also pretty tidy on the 1s and 2s, bringing his own brand of heavily dub and reggae infused dubstep to venues like Fabric, Corsica Studios, Roundhouse and many more. For this mix though he's gone on a bit of a nostalgic tip, recalling the heady days of 2step ruling clubland! The mix (Drink & My 2step) touches on everything that was good bout that scene - Todd The God Edwards, Wookie, MJ Cole, Zinc + everything else in between. Mixing is very tight, and tunes are big, make sure you get on this! If you're feeling the mix, check out Jared's other mixes at his Podcast and get some more info bout this gee at his Twitter.

New Year, New Start... with Paco De Moor

Right, now this is my first actual post of the new decade, partly because I've been slacking, partly due to work and some other commitments, but also due to the fact that I've taken a long hard think about what I want to achieve with this blog.

When I started the blog, I was aiming to begin somewhat of a credible blogging service, with exclusive material and actual in-depth reviews of artists and the work that they have produced. Now to some extent that has been true, but also to a certain extent, I have been slacking as well. This could be due to not having anything to write on, but that is a stupid excuse, because there is always something to write about, I just need to get off my arse and find it. I also feel that at time, the blog has dipped into unwanted territory with some of our posts, lazy music blogging if you will.

So, this new year has given me a new found focus and belief in what I want to achieve and what myself and Ben are aiming for. From today, you WILL be receiving at least one post per day, that is a promise, hopefully more than one, it just depends on how hard we both work ourselves.

Themes are a good start, and they're easy to stick by as well. So, from tomorrow (Monday 10th) we'll be kicking off the revamp and refocus with Mix Monday, which will follow every week, rounding up mixes from the previous week that we've been into, and we'll aim to actually give them a little review, rather than just stick a link and a tracklisting up... this will then be followed by Tune Tuesday, which will include (hopefully) full 320mp3's of tunes that we have been sent, with permission from artists.
Wednesday will see the return of our News post, which will try to keep you updated with various little things, like release dates for planned releases, funny youtube videos, info on gigs of mine and Ben's etc.
Thursday will be a new post as well, called Sound of 2010... basically an in-depth review of an artist we think you should be watching this year. Friday is undecided at the moment, so I'll get back to you on that one. Saturday is going to be a Label showcase, primarily on independant underground labels, but I would also like to do a monthly feature on an established label that I've always admired. Then, Sunday is undecided at the moment, so I'll also get back to you on that one.

There will also be the occasional odd post, you know those ones, you find something out and you just HAVE to blog about it, like deadmau5 having a shit new tattoo or something equally pointless. We'll also be giving you regular Album and EP/12" reviews, probably once a week for EP/12" review and once a fortnight for an album review.

I hope that's cleared up some questions you may have had about the dryness of posts in the past couple of weeks. Here's a little treat for you as well for getting to the end of this essay... Some absolutely banging beats!

Hailing from a small town, Paco De Moor may probably be his country's best kept secret, thanks to a hook-laden debut single Morning After that is rapidly climbing up the electro/house and DJ charts internationally.

Born in the early 90's, Paco De Moor may have been too young to attend the decade's infamous rave parties but the glow stick-era that spawned smash hits by acts as diverse as 2 Unlimited, The Prodigy and Rozalla left its mark.
Growing up into a musical family, Mister P., as he used to call himself, started to play the keys at the age of 6, when he inherited a synthesizer from an older brother whose interest in electronic music had a tremendous impact on his development.

We've been sent a great new mix with possibly one of the weirdest, most epic intro's to a mixtape ever in my view. Here, Paco displays his inept talent for picking out some absolutely filthy electro/techno and placing it together with an abundant ease that I wish I was capable of. Grab it immediately and please buy his latest single Morning After.

1. Paco De Moor - Morning After (Drunken Robot Acapella)
2. Toxic Avenger - Toxic Is Dead (Cyberpunkers Remix)
3. Tom Deluxx - Reactivate

New Tunes for A New Year

Mega busy week for me so far - meeting with UK hip hop MC Twizzle tomorrow to confirm some big news about a live ting going down between me and him, also got some very big news in the pipeline about the Squeaky Bleeps crew hosting Room 2 at legendary student night Union's next date in Brighton. Plus I've just been confirmed to play Milk Teeth at Audio, Brighton this Friday, supporting man like Tomb Crew, Boogaloo Crew + Jon Curtis (perhaps Jon and I should form a crew just to finish off the lineup??) Flyer for this below, check out the Milk Teeth blog here and facebook event here. In addition to that I'll be trying to keep the blog going - so to get things kicked off in style a little post rammed full of tunes.

COUNT // B-More Forward

Classic bmore bootleg from the Count - this is one of the first things I heard from Herve, and it remains to this day absolute fyaah - one of Herve's tunes that has a real sense of longevity that some of his stuff lacks (no doubt due to it's emphasis on baltimore club over fidget house), although the quality of that vocal sample (Ding Dong's Badman Forward Badman Pull Up) may also have something to say in that department.)

Stush creates a suprise banger here, livening up Hard House Banton's massive funky anthem 'Sirens' with a cheeky vocal sample.

It seems as though the Lucky Me imprint can do no wrong at the moment, and Mike Slott's mini album 'Lucky 9teen' is no different - if you like this tune then make sure you get on the album right away - buy links here.

Todd Edwards // Agony

http://www.mediafire.com/?1jickm0wwz3

Classic garage roller from the Teddward machine from his album Odyssey. If you're a London head make sure you check out Fabric this friday - the Numbers crew represent in Room 1 and the new Fabric compilation launch party dominates Room 3.

NYE Edit from Riton that mashes up Auld Lang Syne and Township Funk. Undoubtedly one of the cleverest bootlegs I've heard in a while, if you were out somewhere this NYE during the bells, it seems there's a pretty large chance you heard this bootleg. If so, comment and let us know where and played by who!

Riton & Primary 1 // Radiates (Joker Remix)

http://www.mediafire.com/?mz2ziqmnoni

New Joker remix of the new Riton & Primary 1 collab, Joker using heavy bass and one of the best bits of drum programming I've heard so far this year (not saying much really at this stage in the year!). Get right on this.

JJ Louis // 007

http://www.mediafire.com/?yjm4wn4ydjy

Last up another classic bit of UKG, I clocked this when I heard Plastician play it at the Rinse Xmas party at FWD last week - brings the bass and novelty samples in a big way. What a jokes tune!

Apologies for the lack of any massive writeups today, as I said a very busy week for me, so I thought I'd let the music do the talking!

Bloc Weekender Mix Competition

I've just uploaded my mix for the Bloc Weekender Man Make Music Mix competition to Mixcloud, and as the result is based partly on the judges response and the mixes popularity on Mixcloud it would be greatly appreciated if you'd all listen to the mix, and if you like it favourite/comment it! If I win the mix I'll be playing on the same stage as man like Joy Orbison and George Fitzgerald, and other stages at the weekend are equally big - Benga & Skream, Grandmaster Flash, Roots Manuva, Nathan Fake.

So check out the mix at Mixcloud here, and please spread this to other people you think might enjoy!
