Pipedown Artist Feature

Got an extra special artist feature for you this week - One I've been eagerly awaiting ever since the Pipedown lads promised to send some stuff over.  Between the four lads who run the blog, they seem to do pretty much everything - photography, production, DJing, a TV channel, video production, writing, and all of that at a really high level.  Their sets blend hip hop, funky, dubstep, grime and a bit of house with no trouble at all, and have introduced me to some really great 100bpm stuff as well as getting me back into grime for the first time in a few years.  Today we've got a couple of exclusive new blends for you, exclusive to Squeaky Bleeps, as well as a few productions that I've been absolutely rinsing, and a new mix by cntrst called Muffout Barnetto (I've no idea why it's called that but apparently Sduk thought it up...)

Pipedown:

Excite Twice (cntrst + SimonSays)

First up the new blends - there are two of them and they're both definitely up there immediately as two of my favourite blends - mashing together Zomby and Three 6 Mafia and Lil Wayne and Rustie's remix of Modeselektor, I can tell I'm going to be playing these out all over the place.  Zomby vs Three 6 Mafia especially is a match made in heaven - those autotuned stutters that most people will probably recognise from Justice's The Party fit perfectly over the bubbling bass lines of Zomby.

Rustie v Lil Wayne - A Million Black Blocks

Next up we've got some original material from Excite Twice - Low is a monster of a track, complete with speech simulation vocals, stuttering whirring basslines, a clattering bmore beat and siren samples!  I played this out at Fabric on Monday night and it sounded absolutely great on the system there - make sure you get on this.

Excite Twice - Low (Demo)

A bit of remix action for you now - first up is the Excite Twice remix of Constellation by Paul Dixon.  This is something a bit different for sure, but no less good - definite warm up set fodder.  Chopped up vocals, refreshing synths to rival Boy 8 Bit, and a lovely warm analogue bassline.

The Streets have been releasing a few new tracks via Mike Skinner's twitter recently, and this Trust Me joint was probably my favourite on first listen - I clearly wasn't the only head thinking this, as Sduk jumped on it right away and produced an absolute corker of a remix.  The beginning reminds me a bit of Zariak by Joker with its fade away delays and funky horn stabs, but it soon transforms into a bit of a monster with bassey stabs and staggering drums that keep you guessing for 3 minutes.

Lastly we've got a mix from cntrst, aka Joel Baker.  "48 tunes, 54 minutes. Done on 2 CDJs, one take. No more no less. It's the range of stuff you'll hear me play out."  It's fast moving, excitingly mixed and full of soul - at Chew the Fat on the weekend I heard someone complain halfway during Rusko's set that there was no soul in the mixing or the tunes (and I didn't completely disagree...), and I think that illustrates perfectly what I love about this mix, and all the Pipedown stuff - it's full of soul, or to quote Kode 9, "technicolour, dayglo melt with a topping of g-funk sleeze."  So make sure you cop this mix - it's a must hear.
