Slater & Lime... Creepin.

Trouble & Bass... probably my favourite label about. 2010 is proving quite a year for the NYC based label fronted by heavy bass connoisseur, Drop The Lime. The recent launch of their Heavy Bass Champions of the World series of releases has already contributed towards 11 releases so far this year, and there's another six to come before the end of July... busy busy busy!

Fresh from a studio collaboration from Drop The Lime and adopted son of the family AC Slater comes Creepin... a fiery, fire breathing monster of a tune, layered perfectly with vocals from Drop The Lime and a Gothic piano solo.



It was released yesterday via Trouble & Bass and is available from Beatport, iTunes, Juno Download, Amazon and Boomkat... get on it!

Pure Vibes...

Hey all... this isn't a new contributor to the blog... it's still Lee, just under a new username as I've got a new googlemail address.

Anyway... just wanted to give you all a heads up on a new YouTube channel I've setup, by the name of JustPureVibes. Basically, it's just me posting up new tunes I'm into to help promote them a bit, and support the artists. Music with Soul and Character is the name of the game.

My first featured tune comes via a new project from AC Slater and Udachi, called 92 Eternal. They've come up with a fantastic tune, titled The Feeling, and they handed it over to their good friend B.Rich, and under his new Kastle alias, he came up with this nugget of absolute gold.

You can also head over to the Just... Pure Vibes facebook page to keep up to date with all the tunes I'll be posting... it will probably be around two tunes a week, depending on what's about and what not. AC Slater - UK Tour

Ok, so I've badgered on about AC Slater enough on this damn blog in the last year, but here's another snippet of news that applies for everyone in the UK.
I am so happy that in the past few months that AC has given up the woeful sounds of everything wobble-fied, reinventing his sound and creating something unique with his latest release Take You featuring Ninjasonik, which came out on Trouble & Bass last week. A massive fusion of Chicago House, UK Funky, old skool vibes, and heavy-bass action with a huge spectrum of diverse remixes, most notably from Drop The Lime, Urchins, Nadastrom and Tete-A-Tete.

Yet to come later in the year is his Calm Down EP, with a great club mix featuring scratching from Craze, and his awesome remixes of Crookers' Cooler Couleur, Drop The Lime's Set Me Free, and his collaboration with Mumdance, Badness and 77Klash, titled the Transatlantic Riddim.
However, what's been really impressive of late is how he's been taking on the UK Bass sound, that's steadily getting more support over in the US, thanks to Starkey and B.Rich's new project Kastle.
Taking influences from all the scenes and creating his own take, with a lot of heart. 2010 promises to be a great year for AC Slater and Trouble and Bass in particular.

So, the key behind all this ranting about AC, is due to the fact that this week he is embarking on a tour of the UK, and is stopping off very nicely in London on May 1st for the Londinium warehouse party at Union Car Parks, which is a guaranteed road block.
The last three times AC has played in London, I've either been out of the country or unable to get out of working, aiding to the misery of my current life vacant of his beats so far.
He's just dropped an immense new mix for Mishka in aid for the tour, which starts on Thursday in Cardiff and finishes up in Nottingham a couple of weeks later.
Take a good swipe of the mix, with some top new exclusives, one especially from Trouble & Bass's newest signing Zombies For Money, which I really recommend.

AC Slater... You Got The Love.

I've been consistantly impressed with AC's output of late, there are some producers that put out quantity in hope to gain momentum that way, and some who go for a more minimal approach with fewer releases, focussing a little more on perfection. Then there is Aaron AKA AC Slater, without a doubt my favourite producer of the last two years.

His ability to churn out the remixes and original works at such a high standard is testament to his longevity as a Producer, and then here his longevity as an outstanding DJ and connoisseur, which comes into play, here. Being over the pond in NYC could sometimes leave you slightly at bay from the European/UK scenes, but with Starkey keeping that locked down well, AC is able to reap the rewards of now branching into the UK Bass scene and still maintaining his ties with the Heavy Bass scene in the Big Apple.

With two new releases coming out way on Trouble & Bass soon; Take Me, featuring Ninjasonik, his Calm Down series and Transatlantic Riddim with Mumdance on the way as well, 2010 is going to be another profitable year. Due to working commitments the last two times AC has played in London, I've been unable to see him, yes I want to shoot me as well, but rest assured come T&B's next residency at Fabric (I hope it continues into 2010) I shall be there. Anyway less about my incessant love and more about his new fantastic exclusive mix for Bestival festival's Besti-Blog. A great half hour mix up of new Techno, UK Bass, bass heavy House and Old Skool naughtiness.

AC Slater mix for BBC Radio 1

Ok, so it actually baffles me that this is AC Slater's first ever mix for Radio 1... Kissy what the hell were you doing in 2008... mate loss of points there, sort it out, even Granny Nightingale beat you to this one... anddddd to add to the wound AC doesn't even produce breaks, what the hell!

Anyway rant over... who cares this mix is phat as fuck! Big new tunes coming from Udachi, Drop The Lime and the Slater himself on Trouble & Bass and Slater's own Party Like Us label... boom tunes! Feel da riddim. Biggest news of course though is a collab from AC and Mumdance in the mix... big! Also that 12th Planet remix of Youth Blood is deadly, dropped that last week, big bass! Also if anyone notices two very small AIM notification sounds in this mix then please let me know... maybe it's just me being silly but I swear I heard them... AC, tut tut.

Weekly News

Not had a Weekly News section for a little while and one is much needed. Got some top mixes for you this week, some sexual news about Radio 1, some sexual news about an old man who has a secred fetish for Drop The Lime, and some very very very perculiar news in the form of a Hotel that lets out tents for a night.

First up is the Brooklyn Bass master they call AC Slater. Slater had recently, gone off the radar a little bit as far as productions and remixes go, however, he's come back stronger than ever with a brand new mix full of juicy bass biscuits just for you. 23 tunes in just over 32 minutes, means a running time of just over one minute per tune... not bad!

The net has become awash with overhyped electro synth madness in my opinion of late, so it's a breath of fresh air for me to hear such a delicious array of beats and madness.

I really hope this dude makes it over the pond at least once more this year. Fabric you owe it to us all to book him and Drop The Lime for your 10th Birthday weekend... please, make it happen!

Bangers & Mash Week 3

This week I'm going to give you a quick guide to the man they call AC Slater. Probably one of the hottest producers in the world right now... he currently embarking on a European Tour, which includes a night @ The Egg on May 22nd with a few other UK dates line up also.

AC Slater (real name Aaron Clevenger) hails from Brooklyn, NYC and has been producing tunes since the early 00s, known for his hardcore beats, he set up Pitched Up Recordings which saw 5 vinyl releases, with his 2007 release Crowd Control making it onto Hardcore Heaven 3. However, more recently he's been a major part of the new Housey club scene, when he was commisioned to do remixes for the likes of Freestylers, Moby, Human Resource & Drop The Lime. He's most well known for his original tunes Bassline Time and Jack Got Jacked that was released on Palms Out Sounds Records, a blog for which he is a well known contributer. He's also gone on to establish another record label entitled 'Party Like Us' with a self titled release to launch the label, with Banger following suit shortly after. Although he has also kept up with his Hardcore roots, and released another three digital downloads last year on his Pitched Up label. Most recently he's released his dancefloor hit 'Rock It Out' and he's also been signed up as part of the 'Trouble & Bass' family.

The Slater has also been responsible for remixes of Drop The Lime's Hear Me, Hostage's Shake It, and the 2009 release of Show Me Love by Angello & Laidback Luke.

One of the most imprtant things to note about this dude, is his inclusion in Beatport's 'Top 6 artists to watch in 2009, not something that happens by fluke. Here's a short mix of tunes I compiled last night... enjoy!

1 Month Anniversary Celebration!

I realised today that we hit the 1 month mark on Squeaky Bleeps yesterday... Thrilling

Thrills has really been getting a lot of attention recently - and it's definitely deserved - Kissy Sell Out played his refix/mashup of Chromeo and Skream recently on his Radio 1 show, and I've been playing it pretty much everytime I play out since I got it, and with great results. Thrills has done a whole series of dubstep refixes, all absolute bangers; he manages to give some of the biggest dubstep tracks out there a 4x4 workover.

The Others - Africa (Thrills Refix)

His tracks have been getting support from a lot of heads, both stateside and in Europe: DJ Yoda, Drop the Lime, Mickey Slim, DZ and Nero. Another one of his dubstep refixes that got a lot of plays from me recently has to be his refix of the Jack Beats mix of Jack Got Jacked - AC Slater. Thrills draws out that ravey breakdown, speeds it up, and then it drops to that classic bassline, but with a slightly different bassline this time.

Bring Back The Rave...

So its a subject that's been on my mind a lot lately, but I think it's only now that I think I've really thought I should talk about it in more detail. Firstly though, we need to consider the obvious. What is a RAVE?

Now wikipedia, the 'free encyclopedia' tries to define a rave as being:
"A term in use since the 1980s, to describe dance parties (often all-night events) with fast-paced electronic music and light shows. At these parties DJs and other performers play Electronica, Trance, and Techno with the accompaniment of laser light shows, projected images, and artificial fog."
Although I've more come to like the definition given by Pastronroot.co.uk:
"A rave/free party is an all night (or longer) event, where people go to dance, socialise, get high and generally have fun in an unihibited way with other like minded people. Consider them temporary autonomous zones. The music is a distinctive 'series of repetitive beats' provided by sound systems with DJ's who follow specific genres of music, so the sounds you hear in a good party will be stuff you'll never hear on the radio or really from any standard commercial outlet."
Of course I could do into more detail and talk about the history etc... but most of you will already be familiar with Acid House, 1988, the Reigate Rave, The Hacienda, and Danny Rampling's venture Shoom. So i'll move on to my next point, being about a recent resurgence in rave music.

Now, I'm going to primarily centre my argument on the existence of 'Fidget' music, however, it would be wrong to suggest that only this sub-genre has contributed to the recent rise. There seems to be a complete resurgence in almost all styles of music that originated from Rave. Dubstep has grown out of DnB, 2-step Garage and traditional Dub, emphasising raw and encompassing sub-bass, with random samples and bleeping sounds. Techno has evolved hugely the past five years or so with a huge following being created in Eastern europe and more specifically in Germany, with club Berghain in Berlin, being crowned DJMag's No. 1 club in the world, beating London's Fabric and Ibiza's Space in the process.

With this new found resurgence in rave music, there also seems to be demand for such music in the suburbs of London, which mirrors exactly what happened during the original scene (generally 88-92), with club nights and one off events sprouting up in and around the London metropolitan area, such as FWD (Dubstep), Kill Em All' (Electro/Techno), Supercharged (Breaks, Electro) and most recently in the Kent area, 666 presents (Fidget/Electro/Breaks/Dubstep/Alternative).
When Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs began championing these new experimental sound a few years ago the scene was in its infancy, but it seems the demand for such nights has increased ten-fold in the last 18 months. It seems the old indie scene of 2004-2006 has grown up a bit and gone looking for something a bit harder, a bit more party orientated (I know I did).

The UK scene is now a huge melting pot of up and coming talent ranging through all genres at the moment whether it be Rusko and Skream in Dubstep, Commix and Cyantific in DnB, Herve and Fake Blood in Fidget, Milton Jackson and Dave Spoon in House or Riton and Erol Alkan in Electro/Techno. These artists are only going to benefit the scene and hopefully take it forward and to better times, unlike what happened in the early 90s with the collapse of the rave scene after its drug stained past and the many police raids and club closures that followed.

Seeing as it's the weekend I thought I'd take the time to delight you with a few blasts from the past from producers and DJs that are shaping the new sound today, but incorporating those timeless classics that have put the scene where it is today.

Acen - Trip II The Moon (Hostage Remix)
This remix by the one and only Hostage, for me encompasses everything there was and is to shout about the old and new scenes. With the classic breakdown paying homage to the golden days, and the build and drop to the glory days of the late 90s.

The Prodigy - Everybody Is In The Place (AC Slater Remix)
If there's one thing that Mr. Slater can do, its get people dancing to the most disgusting basslines and catchy beats. He's on the bill for Beatport's artists to watch in 2009, and with his new production 'Hello' branching out to more of a dubby feel, expect big things from him this year.

Altern8 - Frequency (R!M!E Remix)
Now I've already posted this remix before, but purely for this post and the fact that it's a choooon, it had to be posted again for anyone who missed it! Also please check out his material on his MySpace, this dude has some amazing stuff!

Human Resource Vs. 808 State - Dominator (Soulwax Edit)
One of the classic remixes from the duo that's seen a resurgence lately in sets from various french maestro's including Busy P, Xavier from Justice and DJ Mehdi.
