SqueakyBleeps 002 - I Killed Kenny

Following on from our amazing first exclusive mix from Highbloo, whose pounding beats 50cl and Ouch!!! have been huge for many DJs and clubbers alike in the past 6 months; we are proud to present to you the new up and coming DJ/Production trio from Dartford in Kent... I Killed Kenny.

I Killed Kenny we're formed in the summer of 2009 by Dartford DJ and promoter, Seany Bizzle. He's run a huge live club night in Dartford for the last year or so called Dirty Pint, which I've happily DJ'd at and supported in the recent past. I caught up with Seany to find out what makes I Killed Kenny, tick and tock.

- So what exactly is I Killed Kenny and how did the project come about?
We're three lads - Seany, Barni, and Daryl. IKK exists because we all share a similar passion for dance music as a whole. Barni, and myself (Sean) have been djing for roughly 2 years, taking things pretty easy, just playing music for own enjoyment really. This project came about because Barni and I want to express ourselves in a different way from most of the other kids around here - There's plenty of local bands around, a few decent DJ's, but we aim to take it a step further. All three of us are music students, and it was at college where we discovered the talents of Daryl. He's a shit hot producer, making original beats for a couple of years now. Me and Barni are okay at sequencing and MIDI and all that jazz but he really has the ability to help push us forward with our material. We're a good team and although it's only early stages we've already got some pretty big plans for the future.
- A lot of people these days get too obsessed with trying to conform to a type of scene and particular sound... I Killed Kenny doesn't strike me as the kind, you seem too laid back for all that. So I guess, what's the aim with this venture?
I think diversity is an important thing for us. We love the dance scene and the culture that comes with it, but we're passionate about music as a whole. You can hear that from listening to our mixes and in our DJ sets, for me, there's nothing more satisfying than discovering a amazing remix of a massive pop or rock track produced by someone I've never heard of! So I guess, that's what we're aiming for, in the future I'd love someone to say "Wow, this track is sick - Who are these guys!?".
- Now this is your second mixtape, the follow up to a brilliant first may I add, but why do you wish to Kill Christmas?
Thank You! I would never literally wish to kill Christmas, but I work part-time in Clinton Cards - So I'm pretty sick of hearing the same 5 Christmas tracks, stuck on repeat, over and over since mid October. You can probably understand my frustration.
- Here's a curve-ball for you. Jack Beats or Foamo? and Why?
Now I would say this is a toughy because they're both immense. However, I have a massive soft spot for Foamo, it's difficult to comprehend that I've only known about Foamo for about 4 months. The first track that I heard was The Mystery Jets remix, featured in our Christmas mix, and it blew me away, since then I've been hooked. Obviously the other two might think differently, haha.
- Now you're quite a big name on the Dartford clubbing scene, what got you into DJ'ing and Promoting in the first place?
Well, it started a couple of years back, for some reason I decided to purchase a set of shitty Numark CDMix 1 or whatever they're called... To be honest they were an impulse buy, I just thought 'yeah, I'll have a go at that', so I did. Then shortly after a new 'indie-disco' club night opened up in town called Clockwork Monkey's. I became good mates with the promoters, told them I did a bit of DJing (never having even attempted to mix in my life before at this point), and then I grabbed myself a resident slot every week... Then a while after that I started running my ow nights and stuff. That's pretty much the story right there.
- Now most people don't know this, but legends Pete Tong and Mick Jagger were born and raised in Dartford. Front-man of the world's biggest band and one of the biggest DJs in the world... you've got a little bit to live up to don't you think?
Who knew Dartford was such a breeding ground for such talent eh? I guess it's about time Dartford had some fresh faces, the other two are getting on a bit now!?
- What can we expect to see from you guys in the future?
Like I say, we've got some big ideas, but as every DJ/band/artist knows it's not as simple to put them into action. As far as the near future goes, we'll be releasing You Bastards: Volume 2 very shortly. The Christmas mix is just a bit of an interlude, to keep us fresh and on our toes. After Volume 2 we're going gung-ho on working on our own material. Daryl doesn't know it yet, but we want to release an EP of entirely original tracks within the next 6 months...
- What does your ideal Christmas Day involve?
A massive hangover from Christmas Eve.
- Exactly what I like to hear! Thanks for talking to Squeaky Bleeps, and please keep in touch :).
Cheers, and a Happy Christmas from the IKK fam.

A thoroughly nice chap who's got his head screwed on right and understands exactly what the score is. I'm immensely happy to see people from my own local area making a name for themselves and trying out something fresh.

You can check out I Killed Kenny's first entry in their mix series You Bastards here, and keep up to date with everything they're up to, including news of this upcoming EP, which I hope becomes a serious reality; on their facebook here. I shall of course keep you posted also.

Poison - 21st December @ Cargo

A big part of my DJing and producing life so far has been a series of nights I've played at in London, all promoted by a bloke called Niyi - the first one was Heart at Punk - guests included Little Boots and Calvin Harris, and although the night eventually petered out, it evolved into Toys 'R' Us, guests included Dexplicit, Mystery Jets, A1 Bassline. Niyi had to put a forced hiatus on TRU late last year to work on his debut album (which is sounding great by the way), but he's back with a bigger and better night - Poison. The first one is this Monday (21st December) at Cargo, facebook link here. The first night's guest is Dub Police head Trolley Snatcha, and although the residents from past nights haven't stuck around largely (Dick Turpin went on to promote Rise and Jared Phillippo went on to promote Rhyme & Slang, which is coincidentally the Lee's current London club residency.) Anyway enough history, on with the music. Got a few mixes from the other heads playing on Monday.

First up, mix from Niyi - one of the most inspirational DJs around imo - his mixing cannot touch ANYONE in terms of the sheer shock value, and the immense skill the guy's got behind the cd decks. I played this mix to Lee last week and he was absolutely gobsmacked - has had it on repeat ever since I believe.

Next up two mix from one of the lesser known heads playing the night, although still both bringing the heat on the decks. Mixing is tight and tunes are big - believe.

New Releases - 18/12/2009

A whole crop of exciting new vinyl releases out this week - get right on these!
GREENA // Tenzado // Applepips

On his debut release from Appleblim's label, Greena treads the line between house, garage, dubstep and funky.

JOKER // Digidesign (OM Unit Remix) // White Label

This 100bpm hip hop remix of Joker's bass heavy anthem keeps the synth lines from the original, adding a cracking, off centre rhythmic feel to the track.

ROYAL T // 1Up or Shatap EP (Bok Bok & Martin Kemp Remixes) // No Hats No Hoods

Legendary grime label No Hats No Hoods put out a remixes EP of one of this year's biggest grime instrumentals - Martin Kemp & Bok Bok take bringing the funky heat in a big way - don't sleep on this release!

Mix Friday (Meant to do it on Monday but tardiness is underrated)

Right few new mixes for you to start the weekend - get these on your Ipod right away, all absolute fyaah. First up a fantastic mix from a bit of an unknown (for me anyway) - I picked up this mix by Shoq Du Mel over at the Erol Alkan Forum, but the vibe is definitely a different one to most of the stuff over there - mix is on much more of a gutter/dubstep/wonky tip.

Next up Urban Nerds resident Ordio Kid takes us on a trip down garage memory lane - I first cottoned on to the Urban Nerds guys back last year when I supported them at 93 Feet East - and since then I've been seeing their name pop up more and more. Sets all over the world (when I met first met Ordio Kid he was debating whether to go with some of the Urban Nerds DJs to play at Glastonbury or with the rest to play in Ibiza), their own lineups looking heavier and heavier (Urban Nerds NYE party deetz here, one not to be missed). For this one take mix, Ordio Kid is joined on the decks by Drama, double drops a-plenty and mad tight mixing.

New Bullion

It appears I've been a bit slow on this new Bullion single - as it's been announced for a while. Audio samples are already up on his myspace for the A-side (Say Goodbye To What), but it was Marie Ann Hobbs playing the dreamy B-side (Crazy Over You) that really caught me. This is on a slightly different, more melodic and less bass driven tip than Bullion's last release (Get Familiar/Rude Effort), but there's no harm in a bit of melody! Say Goodbye To What comes out on January 18th on Alex Chase's One Handed Music imprint (if you don't know this name, then head here: OHM is one of the most inspiring UK hip hop labels out there at the moment), and there's a pre-order link here.

Meanwhile, check out this rip from Marie Ann Hobb's Radio 1 show - just a taster as such, it's got Radio 1 idents and Hobbs' voice all over it, so please still support the artist and label and get this on pre-order now!

Midweek Tuneage - An Early Christmas Present

Few midweek picks from me, consider them an early Christmas present. Couple of old school jungle and hardcore picks, a bit of hi-NRG ghettotech and a classic mix from London head L-Vis 1990 to finish things off.

First up Alex Eagan (aka one half of Skull Juice, Astronomer and promoter for High Horse and Bloggers Delight) is on remix duties for Woolf's debut single Stand (out on Young & Lost Club Jan 18th). Alex flips the LCD Soundsystem influenced crooner's tune on it's side, taking Woolf's soul influences as startpoint - and combining the rolling guitar line with a great squelchy bassline.)

OTHELLO WOOLF // Stand (Astronomer Remix)

Next up UK grime producer Swindle goes in on a different tip on classic grime track Zumpi Hunter. Terror and Swindle are producing together soon, and it's obvious why - both take the rude colour inherent in grime and combine it with the colour that has gripped the 'W**nky' scene so much this year. This definitely sounds more like a track from aforementioned scene than a grime one, but many of that scene's greatest tracks this year have had more in common with grime than what is labelled as dubstep in your local club (Rustie's Bad Science, Joker's Purple City, Starkey's Gutter Music VIP), a fact that has led to many of these tunes being labelled 'proto-grime'. Anyway, enough over analytical stuff has been said about grime this week (see Dan Hancox's twitter - Dan linked this article, which charts the rise of the East in finance and business, with sinogrime, and heralds sinogrime as "cultural prophecy"). While I'm all for over analysing music (See Kode 9's recent 6 page epic interview in Wire mag here), this seems a bit of a stretch to me. Nothing wrong with the tunes though!

Classic hardcore tune from Jonny L - hopefully gonna be posting a lot more of this kind of stuff on the blog, and this is 1992 joint is a great variation on the standard 'ardkore' template - the classic piano stab breakdown is on a completely different tip than most hardcore tunes, and the use of vocal samples owes more to baltimore club than 'ardkore'

Talking of music of the hardcore variant, Goldie's Inner City Life is more of a jungle one, but still an absolute classic. Sbtrkt takes the tune to a new level, with jittery 2step rhythms tracing the hardcore continuum to it's logical conclusion. Dunno why the tune has been labelled as Timeless all over the internet - it's definitely Inner City Life as far as I can hear, although my relative ignorance over jungle means there may be another Goldie track called Timeless that has similar vocals. Enlighten me if I've got it wrong.

Next up Joker takes the new Riton & Primary 1 track Radiates and pulls of the Joker magic yet again. This makes me all the more excited for Joker's Tron, and the upcoming Joker LP. Definitely one of those 'colourful' tracks in dubstep this year.

Marvy Da Pimp takes this Major Lazer tune to it's logical conclusion - playing on Diplo's love for ghettotech, he turns out a massive ghettotech tune with an insistent drumbeat that is enough to get anyone's foot tapping.

Last up Night Slugs resident L-Vis puts together a mix showcasing a different side to his usual club sets - a mix of classic house tracks from the 80s 90s and Noughties, pulling tracks from Chicago, Detroit and every other corner of the house spectrum.
