Club Candy

I had a great weekend catching up with friends and seeing some friends of old that I'd not seen for over a year, whilst engaging in my residency at Rhyme & Slang @ Public Life on Saturday... I would have ended up at Egg after as well had my mate Fiona not been clobberd over the head by some twat with an obsession for leopard print and an over tense need to have SPACE on the dancefloor. Does she not realise that Public Life + Dubstep + Harvard Bass + Me = Carnage , pushing and sweatyness.
Anyway... time for some new tunes to wet your appetites for the coming weekend!

Riton & Primary 1 - Radiates
Now living up to Who's There as a follow up single is quite something to achieve, but make no mistake this is a brilliantly written tune. With Riton on instrumental duties and Primary 1 sporting some cleaver vocals, the duo have done it again. The video isn't half bad either.

Mom & Dad - The Whole Sh-Bang (Harvard Bass Remix)
I think I am actually in love with this American producer at the moment. His cuts are so fresh and his beats so divine... I do believe its love at first hark. You think something massive is coming in the drop, but it's more than big, it's also clever and it's cunning!

Solo - Minimood (Round Table Knights Remix)
Solo is the absolute final word in potent tropical techno right now, but RTK's have just added a little bounce to the picture, and created something that not only smells good, but feels good too. Warning: Only to be taken in small doses and never more than eight times a day.

Youri Donatz & Franky Ricardo - I Like This Sound
You know it's funny how much a  song can change once the tiniest of vocals has been added. Just think of Crookers - Knobbers... without the inaugural  "Now Push It" it would sound a bit pointless. The same concept applies to this tune... and don't that deep voiced individual just know it ;)

Drop The Lime - Devil's Eyes (Kanji Kanetic's B-Live Mix)
Here we have something a little bit filthier, but still carrying that trademark Kanji sound that I adored back at the start of 2009. Despite there being somewhat of a lack of this style of music in my collection, I can help but smile every time I hear it.

Gremlinz - Picks of dubstep, hip hop, reggae and grime.

Few new bits and bobs from me now - largely dubstep, hip hop, reggae and grime:

Classic grime tune from Wiley here, on a slightly different tip.  At the end of 2002 and the beginning of 2003, as garage started to become less popular and grime developed into something definable, a sub genre of grime emerged - 'sinogrime', that took its influences from the Orient.  Wiley and Jammer were the main exponents of the genre, and this was one of the biggest tunes - check it.

UNTOLD // Stop What You're Doing (James Blake Remix)

This is one of the most extraordinary records I've heard recently - James Blake pulls it off again.  Now available on Hemlock as a 10" with the Pangea mix on the other side, this sounds like it comes from another planet - it starts off gently, but when it fizzles into life it goes off.  This quote from Ben Ufo, head of Hessle Audio pretty much sums it up for me: "the must utterly next level piece of music I've heard in years.  Please support Hemlock and James by picking up this 10" now: Boomkat.

GHOSTFACE KILLAH// Child's Play

Classic tune off the Wu-Tang Clan member's 2000 LP Supreme Clientele - it retells the pleasures and hardships of youth, accompanied by a classic rolling hip hop beat, produced by RZA.

http://www.mediafire.com/?kmyynothdwo

DARKSTAR // Aidy's Girl Is A Computer

First featured on Hyperdub's 5, celebrating 5 years of the label, this then came out as a single on Hyperdub.  Faltering synth lines and delay infused vocals combine with a hypnotic twosteppy beat - a must have record.

http://www.mediafire.com/?5dq2djmjnmj

YT // England Story

Reggae track from UK head Yt, documenting the story of Eighties UK sound systems such as Saxon, Coxsone, Unity, Volcano, Taurus, Jah Shaka, and of much-loved DJs of the era such as Top Cat, Tippa Irie, Macca B, Tenor Fly, Prento Youth and many more.

http://www.mediafire.com/?cwnmz0jmynz

SBTRKT // rekorda

Great tune from sbtrkt here - 2step rhythms and clipped ravey piano chord stabs, this must be one of these future garage tunes everyone is going on about. Jittery, percussive and shuffley, this one is a must have -  grab this tune here.

JOSE JAMES // Blackmagic (Joy Orbison Remix)

I'm sure most heads will have heard of Joy by now, despite this being only his second release, but the boy is bringing some serious heat here.  Difficult to pin down but robust rhythms make a seriously spine tingling listen.  This tune doesn't even drop till halfway through, but when it does, it really goes.  If 2step rhythms and swirly house keys are your ting (if not, why not?), then grab this tune now:

SISTER NANCY // Bam Bam

Classic reggae cut from Sister Nancy, one of those tunes everyone knows.

Introducing... Flatline

Now DJ sets aside, dubstep duos and crews are a dime-a-dozen these days when it comes to the music they produce. However, I'm making a big exception when it comes to these guys, as they are staking a claim to the Hyperdub purist in what soulful dub should really sound like.

Flatline were a DJ duo consisting of George Walker and who have were previously in bands at school but were lured into the world of Dubstep.

"Along with our friend Ben Leadbetter have grown up together, playing in guitar bands and performing gigs at school. We discovered dubstep after hearing the ‘Box of Dub’ Dubstep compilation and hearing Rusko’s ‘Cockney Thug’ on a myspace profile. Since then we have produced our own tunes and started to build a name as DJ’s playing at some of Londons iconic clubs such as Mass in Brixton and the Russian in Shoreditch as well as playing Underage Festival alongside some of the biggest names in the genre... Born in Croydon at the turn of the century, Dubstep, as the name suggests, is the illegitimate child of the London 2-step garage scene and the bass heavy vibes of dub. Despite these obvious influences Dubstep takes elements from a total mash up of genre’s, from Break Beat and Drum n Bass to House and Electro and even elements of minimalism and jazz. The same can be said for your average Dubstep fan – there is no “average Dubstep fan”. Dubstep attracts people from all cultures, creeds, and classes, in a way that no other type of music does. For those of us too young to claim punk, acid house or jungle as our own, Dubstep truly is the genre our generation can say it invented."

Introducing... Mikey Mic

Mikey Mic is the Stockholm sensation storming Hype Machine with his Rolling Stone-acclaimed remixes and no-nonsense attitude to big room electro remixes.

First it was his remake of Jay-Z (feat. Alicia Keys) - Empire State of Mind, which stormed the Hype Machine charts and gathered him blog love from across the world. Then he launched his brand new website - www.mikeymic.com with a great video explaining what he's all about (see below)

And now he's taking on hiphop legend Pharoahe Monch with a Bloody Beetroots-esque rework which is sure to slay some dancefloors, so please enlighten you're hard drives with the following treat!

Thursday 19 November 2009

Remember... Be Good!

So then... Thursday evening... the new Friday, the unofficial beginning of the weekend!!!
I've got a special treat for you here... new material from those London based bleep kings of bass who the title of this blog is taken directly from.

I've been a fan of the Plump DJs for years and in the last year or so they've begun a transition over to the more electro fused scene, tailoring their sets around the new 'no genre' sound spreading the world over. Sharing lineups with the likes of Hervé, Crookers and Deadmau5 to name a few.

Fortunately however, they still take the time to make the odd breaksey anthem that they're known best for. Be Good reminds me of the conjoined sounds of Shifting Gears and Soul Vibrates in one. The funk of Shifting Gears with the menace and glitchy trickery of Soul Vibrates.

Anyway, its time you made you're mind for yourselves... here's the said tune, along with an old classic.

Breakdown...

Are the LA producers that have been making quite the name for themselves since their inception in late 2007. Their releases have turned in the boxes of DJs like Benny Benassi, Laidback Luke, Micky Slim, Z-Trip, DJ Dan, Will Bailey, Donald Glaude, AC Slater and The Freestylers.

They've also been busy collaborating with the likes of The Sounds, Deadmau5, Will Bailey, MC Flipside, South Rakkas Crew, Hot Pink Delorean, Killa Queenz, Whiskey Pete, Kelevra, Rico Tubbs, & Gigi Barrocco to name a few!

Breaks tinged Nu-Dance in its finest form here and the vocals working really well, greatly recommended for warm-up and warm-down sets.

DJ Zinc - Essential Mix

DJ Zinc in my opinion has to be one of the biggest standing examples in the game at the moment of longevity and creativity that never seems to run out of steam. Over the years he's always been two steps ahead of anyone else whether it be in terms of Drum n Bass, Jungle, Hip-Hop, Breakbeat or even now his own perfectly crafted sub-genre of bass-fueled trickery and substance, Crack House.

2009 has seen the re-invention of a true legend and as I found out back in August when I met the man, a thoroughly nice guy as well. While Skream and co. were raking in the booze at a 16plus event at Ministry of Sound, Zinc declined the offer of some free stella with simply the remark "ahhh no thanks, that's what the young-ens do don't they". A truly remarkable and professional individual who has surely influenced my own DJ sets in the past year more than any other DJ or Producer in the land.

His January, April, July and September Crack-House mixes speak for themselves in terms of the 'Nu Sound' of his own that he has begun to forge, but for me this is the ultimate package of what he is about at the moment. Bringing together a smoldering hot-pot of sounds ranging through all scenes and sub-genres of House music, and even the odd compotent of Techno and UK Garage, ladies and gentlemen I bring you the best Essential Mix of 2009... Believe It!

Fantasy

A new re-edit from me, on a kind of tropical dubstep tip.  The XX album hasn't been away from my ears since I got it earlier this month, and there have been some quality remixes already - the Rory Phillips mix of Crystallised especially.  I've really loved the general vibe of this song but found it a little too 'nothingey' for a 3 minute tune, and so my edit adds a little bit to it, makes it a little bit more interesting.  File under Zomby, Untold, James Blake.

Enjoy!

Rubix - Baiser Sur La Disco

To be released soon on Girls Love DJs Records is the newest tune from Dutch producer Rubix. It's staking a claim to Riva Starr's big new tune I Was Drunk for sheer brilliance and stupidity!

Check It Out...

Club Candy

Evening folks... hope you've all had a good weekend... filled with much misbehaving an debauchery. I ended up spending the majority of my weekend recovering from Fabric on Friday night. It was only the second time I'd been to see my favourite Producer/DJ duo of the moment Jack Beats, so as you can expect it was a messy night!!!

I do believe that Mr. DJ Zinc stole the show though, with an hour of simply blistering deck work. Serato seems to be opening a whole new world for the East-London Producer, and his amazing new sound was typified to perfection in his early Saturday morning appearance on the legendary Essential Mix. I urge you to check that out... It is fastly becoming the greatst of the whole of 2009... possibly beating Fake Blood and Boys Noize to that honour.

Anyway, to this weeks amazing selection of club bangers!

Bertie Blackman - Byrds Of Prey (DC Breaks Remix)

Currently earning respect from an array of producers from different scene's this new soon-to-be DnB anthem is helping to launch the career of Bertie in the UK, with devastating effect. This is my biggest tune of the week and the best DnB tune I've heard since Sub Focus's stadium piledriver Rock It. Bigups to The Fat Club for this banger!

René Et Gaston - 'Vallée De Larmes (Hostage Remix)

Now this seems to be just a teaser from Hostage, before he drops his new Valhalla EP on Nightshifters on December 1st. One of the most eagerly awaited releases of the Autumn/Winter period for me, and a release that should bring in some overdue revenue for one of the hardest working Producers in the scene.

Bassjackers ft. Apster - Klambu (Original Mix)

Courtesy of the main man Zinc and his wonderful Essential Mix from the weekend that I really need to stop badgering on about... but a lovely display of techy, rolling weird bassness, that I quite like. Perfect for those 7am *** induced moments with cheese and crackers.

Zeds Dead - Dark Side Dub

I've been a fan of this Canadian based producer ever since his amazing remix of Barletta's Panther back in the summer, which I featured in my August mix... The man is now putting out original material of this own, this being probably the best of those. Sampling the awesome Star Wars in the process and garnishing it with a tasty trippy bassline.

Altered Natives - Rass Out

This funky anthem came out towards the beginning of 2009 and was used with devastating affect by DJs like Sinden, Mistajam, DJ Zinc, Switch and Diplo among others. With a slight Baile Funk feel to the track, a style which is becoming more prevalent in recent releases from the likes of label's Pellagrino and Dubsided.

Butter // Drift Review

This year has seen albums released from two of a new wave (W**ky??) of hip hop producers - Glaswegian Hudson Mohawke (Butter) and American Nosaj Thing (Drift).  Although sonically these two albums may not have a lot immediately in common - Drift is an alltogether more sombre affair, whereas Butter bursts with life and colour.  However these two albums represent the future of hip hop, both UK and US - coming at an exciting time in dance music - future garage, funkstep, they sum up everything that's exciting about music right now.

The first we heard of Butter was Rising 5, which was given out as a free download earlier this year.  The drums stutter and glimmer, and sound like something completely organic and alive - one could be forgiven for thinking that Rising 5 is a soul track from the 70s.  The snare rolls combine with the harp to create a living breathing masterpiece.

Hudson Mohawke - Rising 5 (Right click, save as)

The album as a whole has plenty of standout moments - it shows how much Mohawke's production has matured since the Polyfolk dance EP, in that it is more cohesive as a whole.  The album is full of audio snippets that glide, shimmer and chime.  The panpipe hysterics of FUSE, one of the only 140pbm songs on the album, are led by euphoric solos.  Another standout moment for me was Dam Funk vocalled track Allhot - a future Rnb hit, full of G-funk swagger.

Drift's sonic palette has much more of a dark and sombre feel to it - organs brushing up against sub bass. Drift is harder to pin down as an album, coming across as more of an ethereal listen - sure to be compared to Flylo and Boards of Canada by lazy journalists. Album opener Quest combines eeriechoirs and toy pianos to create a dreamlike atmosphere.

Fog makes use of an infectious beat, heavy hip hop rhythms, Europhile synthlines and stuttering vocal samples to penetrate your mind. Light 1 and 2 are the most pyschedelic of offerings here, full of crystallizedmelodics. Where FlyLo and HudMo utilise overcrowded beats and synthlines to create a feeling of analoguetape warmth, Drift is an alltogether more simple and less crowded affair - full of chilly minor key synths and fractured drum programming.

Without a doubt, both of these albums are essential listenings, so make sure you do the right thing and support theartists - you can buy Butter here, and Drift here.

Club Candy

After a big weekend that saw probably the biggest gig of my life in the main room of London 16+ night Mashed up @ Club Colosseum (capacity 1500). I closed the main room on the night, which is home to a 20kw EAW system. As you can imagine I had a lot of fun with that ;).
As you may have noticed a few minor changes have taken place on the blog, with the site becoming somewhat wider, this being due to my limited knowledge of HTML having expanded somewhat.

I think it's given the site a fresh new look, and means we can have bigger pictures on the site... hooray! Now, a big new week ahead, culminating in my first trip to Fabric since the end of July, so here's to that! To the !!!TTTTTUUUUUNNNNNEEEEESSSSS!!!

Gucci Vump - Sha! Shtil! (L-Vis 1990 VIP Remix)
Now this is a remix that I've been wanting to get my hands on for some time. Ever since I heard that L-Vis had made a second remix of this fantastic tune. The first of the remixes has been available for a little while now, receiving some love from the one and only Annie Mac, but this second one is a perfect example of L-Vis more soulful sound that I have grown to love.

Axwell - I Found You (Remode Mix)
An anthem of fairly old statue, but this is making a big comeback in my sets with all this tropical and bleepy house and techno being so prevalent in the past year. An absolute classic with one of the biggest drops that I know. If you don't already own this, you really are a school boy.

Drop The Lime - Set Me Free (Zombie Disco Squad Remix)

Along with Harvard Bass' attempt, one of the better remixes of the original EP that is set to drop on Trouble & Bass digitally tomorrow, this remix is one of those, "for the morning after..." kind of vibes, with percussion to stamp your feet for. Big remix.

Trip - Who's That (Jack Beats Remix)
This is one of the earliest remixes from the biggest duo of the year and after being slightly disappointed at there being no extremely new material from JB (tbh they deserve a break actually), I went back to the old stuff and this is the pick of the bunch. Such a jokes banger.

Will Bailey - Hit The Club (Hot Mouth Remix)

Definitely one of my favourite tracks of the year in Hit The Club... it was nice to see Will break away from the stagnent wobble scene and venture into making something more accessible for the masses, and this is a great re-work from a rising new talent out of Los Angeles.

Thursday 5 November 2009

SqueakyBleeps 001 - Highbloo

I am very proud to present to you the first installment in our mix series.
The mixes will be coming monthly and will feature up and coming producers/DJs from around the world.

HighBloo is 19 and has only been producing for a year now, his songs are some of the freshest productions I've heard in a while now and if he carries on this way, he's gonna be, well, huge. I'm so jealous. His style is summed up perfectly by this - a mixture between Siriusmo and Mr. Oizo with his own fresh touch.

Club Candy

Hope you all had a great weekend, I ended up spending one night back home in Dartford testing out my mate Robs' new floorstanding speakers, and fooooook was it just a weeeee bit fun hehe. Then the second, Halloween, was spent with the same people in Reading as my mate Mike was DJ'ing at a wee student halls party. Apple bobbing and drinks games aplenty... tittt was guuud, if you catch my drift ;)!
Some really big tunes coming out at the moment with Proxy and Jack Beats releasing new music, but here's a few free tunes including a banger from Crookers! peace. 320k a-plenty!

Congorock & Crookers - Sbombers
After a year of hate and banter at the expense of the Crookers... I am glad to say they are definitely back and with one hell of an almighty bang! I've been a fan of Congorock as well for some time and its a real pleasure to see them collaborating on a release that is 100% legitimately FREE! This shit be bannnging blud!

Black Eyed Peas - I Got A Feelin (Nick Sandoval's Dont Forget The Bass Re-Fix)
Yes, yes I know it's the bloody Black Eyed Peas, but DJ veteran Nick has done a really superb job here giving it a some new funk and a new edge. Bigups and expect a feature on this guy! coming later in the week!

Cavner - Springbok
A great new track here from my main man Cavner, also known as Dan Pitts, who I introduced to you a couple of months ago. He's been hard on the production lately and I think this is the pick of the bunch! Bounce and style in abundance.

Pyramid - Get Down
Hot, free release from the one and only Pyramid here who I've been a big fan of since their inception last year when they made big noise with their debut 12" Wickedest Combination/The System was released on the mighty Funkatech Records. Lots and lots of bass and a fine hook to keep you kids quiet for almost eight minutes.

Major Lazer - Hold The Line (dMon Remix)

Probably the 5000th remix of ML, but this one I'm really digging. Everything this guy churns out always makes me smile and this is absolutely no exception. Please get your mitts onto it!

Soundclash - Ben White vs Haido Round 2

The second part of a mix series that kicked off back in June (you can catch the first part here), this part may have taken a little more time to put together than the previous one due to a few work and internet problems here and there, but this part's finally finished.  It all kicks off fairly chilled on my part with Bullion's unique blend of hip hop and Brian Wilson, and Aidan finishes off with some stunning electronica from Dntel.
